Around the close of the 1800s, graphic designers began paying closer attention to the use of pattern, design and shape in their works. The man whose influence changed the way modern graphic designers look at a page and who introduced those elements was merely 26 years old when he passed away. Aubrey Beardsley made his mark on 19th century aestheticism with his unique expression of the art nouveau style. His style has made several resurgences in the modern age. Oscar Wilde, a celebrated and controversial literary figure and champion of art of the time, believed moral or ethical concerns should not be allowed when judging art, and that art was simply an end unto itself. Wilde penned an interesting story, which is both curious and deviant. This youthful illustrator employed dark eroticism, beautiful seeping lines, and patterns with intelligent distortions to decorate this story.
The artwork he did is marked by stark juxtapositions between light and dark. The delicate patterns created on a white background are strongly contrasted with the large borders and other areas of darkness. His page was commonly unbalanced and the artistic movement was displayed with sweeping, continuous and undulating curves. While the characters in most of his drawings are just simple outlines the objects they are holding, like their clothing or hair, are most often complex. The intricate and the plain combine in these pieces to communicate a strength that compels the eye to explore its every detail.
Imports from Japan stimulated and aroused designers toward 19th century's end. This coupled with a rejuvenated interest in early Renaissance decoration and medieval arts exhilarated artists of the time period and reinvigorated the entire art world. The artist's pieces were often copied in Europe and America and he gained notoriety due to illustrations having turned up in a series of renowned materials for circulation. Poster art evolved during the 19th century; it was first simply used as commercial advertising, and then changed into a completely different art form. Posters were some of the first things to be printed in color, all of the books still being printed in black and white. One colorful and arresting image was the focus of the leader of poster design. Product information was kept as minimal as possible. Artists understood that attracting the attention of someone required simplicity, which was accomplished by flat, simple shapes and bold colors. Yet, the lines he used to construct his images were hesitant. They were a bit broken like those of an Impressionist painting. Tbis artist's work is therefore widely known as the precursor to the true art nouveau poster aesthetic.
Later illustrators employed bolder, smoother lines, creating a style that evolved into what is now known as the Art Nouveau Poster Style. You will recognize his work by the lithe young maidens dressed in flowing clothing, whose long hair surrounds them with fanciful forms. There was another popular art nouveau poster designer who created graceful, thin strips. On one of them there was typically a head to toe rendering of a lady. To make the intricate and detailed patterns of the time, the artists would draw from many sources including fold art, Arab and Moorish decoration, Hebrew lettering, Celtic motifs, Japanese wood cuts and Byzantine mosaics.
Books and reprints are available today for many of the turn-of-the-century artists. In addition, there are antique merchants focusing on the sale of 19th and 20th century posters. These can generally be found by attending larger antique shows. They aren't available for peanuts. Bring your checkbook and be ready to write two or three zeroes in order to bring home one of these originals in mint condition.
