What is the brown liquid seeping out from the antique butter churn I bought?
I recently bought an antique ceramic butter churn and, as I do with all the stuff I buy on-line before use, I scrubbed it well then let it sit overnight in water with a bit 'o bleach. I got up the next morning and found that the churn was seeping a brown liquid out of all the imperfections in the exterior glaze and especially from where the handle was broken off. After 5 days of soaking, it is still seeping. What is the "brown" stuff and can this churn be used safely for food products?
no antique ceramic should be used for food until being tested for lead. That is in addition to you 'brown seepage' issue.
