The diverse Mexican Art and Craft tradition
Mexico is a diverse country. Its history is divided into both Pre-Hispanic and Hispanic periods. The Pre-Hispanic period consisted of cultures that existed before the invasion of Europeans. The latter was when the Europeans invaded Mexico (which was about 500 years back). Both periods have left us with a rich tradition in art and craft. Mexican crafts are an integral part of Mexican Culture. Over these 5-6 centuries, a wide variety of Mexican crafts and pottery styles were developed that have now become an integral part of Mexican Culture and Heritage.
Mexican crafts represent a mixture of both European and Native American art styles. Today most artists who make crafts are of rural backgrounds where the native and Hispanic traditions are stronger (as opposed to the urban city culture of the big cities of Mexico). During the early years of the Hispanic Period, many of the items used in the house were made of wooden fibres. Utensils, plates, bowls, baskets, bags etc were all made of this material. Even till today wooden fibre made items are sold in large numbers in rural areas.
Apart from wooden fibre items, weaving, leatherworks, paper, metalworking and ceremonial items are the other types of crafts popular in Mexico. Ceremonial crafts are very popular in Mexican culture. Cinco De Mayo and the Day of the Dead are famous Mexican holidays for which artists craft skulls with various creative designs and piñatas. The designs that artists use in Mexican Crafts reflect different things. Pre-Hispanic designs consisted of scenery and events being drawn into the craft. When the Europeans arrived, the style of design changed and artists started drawing things like geometric shapes. Interestingly Mexican crafts reflected not just European but Asian designs also. Many crafts had faint influences of Ancient Chinese art. Plateresque and Churrigueresque styles brought by the Spanish had major influences in the art and crafts of Mexico. These styles gave birth to the "Baroque style" in these crafts in the 19th and 20th centuries. Hence the early invasion of the Europeans allowed Mexican craft designs and styles to be in line with the newly developing styles of art in Europe.
The different styles off Pottery in Mexico
Mexican Pottery is one of the popular traditions in Mexican history. The designs that artists used on pots were similar to the ones used for other crafts. Different regions in Mexico developed different styles of Pottery. These styles were European, Native American or mostly a mixture of the two. Talavera Pottery is the most famous style of pottery in Mexico. Its origins were in Puebla. Authentic Talavera is very distinct firstly for the clay it is made with. Talavera pots have a "milky glaze" in its appearance. Talavera infuses different techniques of pottery like Chinese, Italian, Spanish and Native American.
Juan Mata Ortiz is a famous village in the Chihuahua region of Mexico. It is well known for the Mata Ortiz and Pakime styles of pottery. These two styles are distantly related to the Puebla style of pottery. Another style of pottery famous in Mexico is found in the Guadalajara region. Traditionally, they are known for the low fire pottery. Barro Negro and the green glazed pottery of Atzompa are the famous styles of pottery in Oaxaca. The Barro negro employs black clay (hence known for its distinctive colour). Santa Maria Atzompa in Oaxaca has followed the green glazed pottery tradition for centuries. The "green" colour comes from the lead monoxide layered on the pots. The glazing technique was introduced by the Spanish in this region, but region had been making pottery with the same distinctive green colour.
