Regarding The Vintage Kewpie Doll
Children from all over the world enjoy playing with dolls. Toys vary in size and the materials they are made of. Children are not the only ones that dolls appeal to. Children aren't the only ones that find dolls endearing. In fact, it's the adults that are collecting costume and antique dolls as a hobby. One of the more famous doll collectors would be Queen Victoria of England who reportedly had more than a hundred dolls.
The first doll-like figures are attributed to era of Ancient Egypt. However, only during the 1600' and 1700's did doll fabrication become a successful business venture because of a considerable build up on the demand side. Mostly cloth, paper and wax were used as materials for these early dolls. However, by the 1900’s a great variety of other materials have been explored and used for making dolls, an example of which is bisque or unglazed pottery. The Kewpie is an example of a doll initially made in bisque that became trendy in the 1900's.
These dolls were based on the illustrations by artist Rose O’Neill and were first made by toy manufacturers in Germany. Over the years, other materials have been used to make Kewpie dolls such as composition, plastic, and vinyl, but nothing is more precious and prized by Kewpie enthusiasts and doll collectors than the Vintage Kewpie doll, usually made of bisque.
Someone looking to purchase a Vintage Kewpie doll should be aware of the differences in materials used and the general appearance of the modern Kewpie doll and earlier Kewpies. To distinguish between antique Kewpie dolls and the newer vinyl ones, look at the color of their wings. Blue wings mean the doll is an antique. Nude and no wings mean the doll is a newer model. The earlier Kewpie dolls usually had Rose O'Neill's signature or the name O’Neill, imprinted on them. The phrase made in Germany is usually printed in cases where there is no O'Neill printed.
As is the custom now, unlike before, wherein the names of toy companies who manufactured the dolls were not printed, to help you identify easily, which company made it. It was also very common for the earlier dolls to have clothes; and when a Vintage Kewpie doll is found with clothing, it further increases the value of the doll. The red and gold paper heart that can be found on its chest and a round label found at the back, are the other verifiable marks for vintage Kewpies.
