Rare Microcars A Screen To Europe's Past
European microcars such as the Messerschmitt KR-175 were initially designed to solve transportation difficulties during World War II. With lengths of under 10 feet and engines smaller than 750 cc, microcars made this possible. However today, the cars are appreciated more for their futuristic form, writes the brand new York Times. Thus, the small European vehicles are popular – and uncommon – gems in museums and on the collectors' circuit.
The practically functioning microcar has a futuristic design
In the 1940s and 1950s, Americans were steered toward large automobiles by automotive advertising. In Europe, the opposite had been true. Microcars started showing up there. The Times heard, "These vehicles have been a response to desperate conditions," from Peter Svilans who is a microcar historian. Auto enthusiasts are nevertheless amazed with the design toughed such as the original German Messerschmitt KR-175 that had three wheels and also the Italian Isetta that had egg-shaped doors that made up the front of the automobile. Places like the Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum near Atlanta are a testament to just how highly regarded microcars are, even today. Collecting microcars is what Weiner likes to do. Since 1991, he has been doing this. Microcars are hard to discover, he told the Times.
"With microcars, you do not just show up with a wad of cash and say sell it to me," he said. "In Europe, they mean something more. It's like you showing up and asking me to sell my dad's watch."
Don't treat a microcar just like a plaything
Microcars are not giant sized children's toys, even if they look like they may be. The French Rovin Z-4 is really a good example of how much power these vehicles have as they can go at highway speeds. They don't have any safety features in them though, making them dangerous. The crumple zone on a microcar is just about non-existent, which means that within the event of a collision, the force would be transferred practically entirely to the driver's body.
Microcar stopped being made with economic prosperity
Within the mid 20th century, Europe had a lot of monetary problems. Once these difficulties had been fixed, there had been more of a vehicle mass production. It became essential in the early 1960s to have more powerful and safe cars. This is when Volkswagen, Renault and Fiat cars became more popular. Microcars were called a "small wonder." They were gone as quickly as they came. Microcars only exist anymore because of museums. The Messerschmitt is one of these. Today, only 50 KR-175s are known to exist.
