Learn About Roman Vessels
In ancient Rome, methods of storage were limited. Practically everything was stored in some type of vessel. Thes could include pitchers, bottles, or flasks. They were made of anything and everything from metal to porcelain, glass to pottery.
Glazed pottery could also be used. Vessels this type were labeled amphorae. In addition to all of these types of ancient Roman vessels, some were even made of wood and skin.
Aside from being used to store things in the markets, amphorae were also used to sell goods and to house them for transport and trading.
The most common thing to find on any type of amphora was a ring of sorts that was originally supposed to be a decoration by those who saw it. Later it was realized that the ring was actually used to bind the vessels together in order that they could be shipped on wagon back or on ships in order to stack and keep them together so that the goods which were being sent were secure and safe. This kept the vessels not only tightly set together but also assured that they remained upright when they were carrying items to market.
Liquids as well as dry goods could be transported this way. Once items had been sold they could be packed in vessels and shipped.
An interesting bit of trivia that you can use to impress your friends, is that there is actually a hillside in a place called Testaccio where the ancient Roman vessels were broken and discarded in ancient times. A hill there contains of roman vessels over a mile around.
Not all of the ancient Roman vessels were broken or done away with. Oftern time these could be passed down to the less fortunate. Some of these would not seal but could still be used for other purposes. Some people who were very poor and could not afford a more suited and well constructed amphorae or Roman vessel would re-purpose the older ones and use them for things like urns to hold the ashes of loved one, or even in some cases, as urinals in their homes.
The more expensive vessels were made of metal such as silver and gold. Others were of glazed pottery and other varieties of materials that would be used for housing expensive wines or for serving at the tables.
