Visiting the ancient New Forest - A guide
The New Forest was planted over 1000 years ago and became a royal hunting preserve for William the Conqueror. The forest covers around 100,000 acres with around two-thirds open to the public. It has an extensive variety of trees and offers a natural habitat for five varieties of deer and some 2000 wild donkeys and ponies. The forest is also outstanding walking countryside – for the more adventurous, there is the possibility of discovering one of the 22 lost Saxon villages which are said to lie hidden in the dense undergrowth. There is also a collection of present-day villages as well as an array of visitor attractions tucked away in the trees. The following are among the most notable.
Breamore
This Tudor village features a collection of cottages huddled around a pretty green and a magnificent Saxon Church, which is set among trees on the outskirts of the village. Breamore House is also worth mentioning. It's more than 200 years old and houses a good collection of artwork, tapestries and furniture.
Brockenhurst
An attractive residential village with a ford in the main street. It has a Norman church that was constructed on a mound and featuring a yew tree that is said to be over 1000 years old. Brockenhurst Golf Club is also worth seeing and is one of the most attractive heathland courses in the UK.
Cadnam
A traditional village with great travel links and a distinctive thatched inn, The Sir John Barleycorn. It surrounded by broad open commons that are by the National Trust – ideal for ramblers and hikers.
Fritham
A village that consists of a few houses and a hotel. It epitomises the remoteness of the region. The idyllic Eyeworth Wood, with its large pond is close-by and Roman pottery and fossils were also found in the surrounding countryside.
Lyndhurst
This is the busy administrative centre of the New Forest, surrounded by picturesque woodland. Notable attractions include the 17th century Queen's House and the Victorian Gothic Church, elaborately decorated by Millais, Leighton and Burne-Jones. The grave of Alice Liddell lies in the churchyard, the inspiration of Lewis Carroll's Alice.
Minstead
This village surrounded by a maze of country lanes and tracks. Its 13th century church has attractive gable windows, rubble and daub walls and a triple-decker pulpit. The Rufus Stone, is located about 1 mile north-west and marks the spot where William II was felled by an arrow.
Moyles Court
Moyles Court, named after the manor house around which it grew is a typical New Forest village. The manor house dates from the 17th century and was the home of the Lisle family for many years – it is now used as a school.
Ringwood
This bustling market town, which is situated on the banks of the Avon is a centre for trout fishing. It features a collection of old houses and is where the Duke of Monmouth was taken prisoner during the 17th century rebellion.
Rockbourne
A village with one long main street that is fringed with both Georgian and Tudor houses as well as a collection of beautiful thatched cottages. Some are located on the north side of the village which can be reached by a little bridge which spans a brook. A 13th century manor house is located on the outskirts that form part of a farm. The site of Roman villa is also situated south-east of the village.
