Dreaming Of A Malawi Safari?
Although the Republic of Malawi is one of the world’s least developed countries, it has probably the world’s friendliest population! In cultural terms, holidays in Malawi are especially authentic and in-depth as well as being wonderfully enjoyable. Add to this superb birding, interesting and varied gameviewing, the stunning Lake Malawi and much of geographical interest and one has all the ingredients for a favourite Africa destination – and Malawi is certainly one of ours. Formerly known as British Central African Protectorate, Nyasaland, Malawi gained independence in 1991. The economy is based predominately on agriculture with tourism also being important. The country covers some 118,500 sq km of which over one fifth is the enormous Lake Malawi, thus dominating the geography and running almost the entire eastern length of the country. sailing in africa With its rolling plains, rounded hills, highlands, mountains and the lake the climate of this narrow, elongated plateau country is sub-tropical with breath-taking scenery.
Malawi's birding is superlative near the lake and in the marshes and highlands, a Malawi holiday is truly exceptional for birders and is one of our favourite birding destinations with over 600 recorded species. The game on a Malawi safari (wildlife being central to the requirements of many visitors to Africa) is not at the densities of say, Tanzania which lies to the north but wildlife in Malawi is reasonable including good elephant, some predators and decent populations of antelope and river/marsh dwelling species. However there is so much else to see and do that Malawi is actually probably the most “rounded” country in Africa in terms of tourism.
Lake Malawi is fundamental to a Malawi holiday. The lake’s measurements are easily remembered at (very) roughly 365 miles long by 52 wide and, of course, the eastern side of the lake is actually in Mozambique as the Mozambique/Malawi border runs down the lake malawi holiday One can be as adventurous as one likes in the crystal clear freshwaters of the lake: lazing on the sand beaches or in the small inlets or swimming, scuba diving, canoeing, windsurfing or kayaking. lake malawi holidays Goggling or diving near the rocky outcrops is akin to swimming in an aquarium as the variety of cyclids (tropical fish) in the lake are amazing and the Lake Malawi Marine Park was actually the first park in the world to protect the marine life of a fresh, deepwater, lake. There are various yachts one can charter for a few days or a week - the sailing is excellent - before, perhaps, heading up to the highlands to the tea plantations and the cooler weather or to see some game.. (It is refreshing that some lodges in Malawi are exceptionally comfortable and very personable without being super-luxury, both in the bush and on the lake; the norm is also excellent guiding).
But a visit to Malawi will always be remembered above all for its wonderful culture and crafts such as pottery as well as its scenery and geographical variation. The current inhabitants were preceded by bushmen then Bantu tribes who emanated from Angola followed by Arab and Portuguese merchants who visited when the country was then dominated by the Maravi people from whom the country derives its present name.
Finally, holidays in Malawi can easily be combined with Zambia, South Africa, Tanzania or Mozambique so, with its own attractions, Malawi is that rare beast: a destination which can be all things to all people.
