What is Studio Art Glass?
The Studio Art Glass movement started in the US in the 50s and 60s by artists such as Dale Chihuly and Harvey Littleton. Before them, glass was often produced in the factories. But afterwards, glass production became a field of the artists just like painting, sculpture, or music. Glass was produced in the artists' studio and was appreciated as a piece of art. While prominent artists now have large studios and numerous assistants, a studio is still distinguished from a factory in that glass is not mass produced automatically.
Where can you find good Art Glass for Investment?
1. Auction Sites
This is the easiest way to reach potential sellers. You can simply type in "art glass" or similar keywords in the search engine and it will find sellers for you. Some of these sellers are individuals who are looking to expand their own collection by selling their less desired pieces and purchasing other pieces. Some of them may not be qualified or knowledgeable – so beware of scammers and use your wise judgment when buying! A great advantage of auction sites is that you can also sell your own pieces on the internet and make money for more pieces that you want.
2. Emerging Artists
Contact galleries or do internet research to find emerging artists. While their pieces might not be the most expensive and recognized ones right now, they may dramatically increase in value as the artist becomes more established in the industry. You will literally be able to see your piece grow in value as time passes.
3. Established Artists who will soon retire
Also contact galleries or do internet research, especially about the past achievements and history of the artist. People always want things that we cannot get. That is human nature. When prominent artists retire, their pieces will increase in value, not only because their works are amazing, but also because they will not make any artwork anymore.
4. Flea markets and other places where you would normally not expect to find great artwork
While condition and quality cannot be guaranteed in this setting, you might find rare pieces that the original owners simply did not appreciate. If you trust your acumen, you can either own such art glass yourself or you can sell them to people who would love to own those pieces.
5. Online Stores that are not auction sites
One of the advantages of online stores over auction sites is that they are probably not individual sellers. They are doing business – they will have their customer policies, and if they want to stay in business, they will have to keep their words. However, choose your online stores wisely. Use common sense – does the site provide a privacy policy and return policy? Does it look professional and organized overall? Who are their artists? Make an informed decision based on your information.
Regardless of where you buy your art glass, always study the basic facts about the seller and the artist before purchasing anything. Each place has its own advantage, and your glass collecting experience will be much more fulfilling if you choose the right option for the right purpose.
