Three Crucial Things You Should Know Before Buying Clear Floor Vases
Selecting clear floor vases for your room décor is perhaps more difficult than choosing ceramic or porcelain ones. That is because clear vases may be glass, hard plastic or crystal. The characteristics of these three materials differ from one another and therefore you have to identify first the material of the item you are currently looking at. Aside from the material, the durability of the vase has to be estimated. Along this line you will want to know how thick the vase should be. Remember that glass and crystal shatter easily if exposed to the wrong conditions.
A closer look at crystals and glass
Glass is the most fragile of these materials. That is why if you need vases that are durable, you should get one made of crystal. Before going out to shop for clear floor vases, bear in mind the distinctions between those two materials. The usual test people do to tell crystal from glass is to tap the rim of the floor vase. If it rings like a bell then it is not made of pure glass. Crystal is also basically glass but it has been treated with lead to make it more durable and dense. The density of crystal accounts for its ring. Crystal is also clearer than glass and frequently, you will see a faint trace of color in glasses. Glass is harder than crystal. This makes it impossible to carve into it the way potters can emboss the sides of crystal.
The shapes of clear floor vases
More often than not, clear floor vases made of crystal or glass are made in the most basic shapes. They will often have wide bases to minimize the possibility of their tipping over on their sides. If narrow bases are found, they will be on the shorter vases. The body of the vase is also frequently cylindrical. It may also widen slightly as it proceeds to the lip. Necks are seldom encountered with large crystal floor vases as those structures are prone to breaking. When a neck is present, it will be wider and possibly made thicker in width. Handles are purposely omitted for the same reason of fragility. The rare occasion when you can find handles is when you encounter pitcher vases which may also be used for containing and pouring out water.
You will realize how choosing a suitable clear floor vase for your purpose may involve a lot of study. This is to ensure that you do not lose your investment in the vase. Choose glass vases if durability is not a concern. Otherwise you should select one made of crystal. If you want an exceptionally clear vase, you should also prefer a crystal vase. Whether you choose glass or crystal, make sure the thickness of the material can endure the kind of use you are planning for it.
