A Brief History Of Decorative Vases
Decorative Vases come in all sorts of shapes, material, design, and, dare sizes. Nearly all early civilisations had pottery of some description including Decorative Vases.
Ancient Greece developed pottery over several periods starting with the protogeometric stage which went from circa 1050 to 900 BC. The distinct pottery from this time is regocnised by circles, triangles, wavy lines and arc renderings were displayed on the various decorative vases of those times. These renderings were skillfully added with dexterity, using most probably a compass and a multiple brush. Following this period came the geometric style in the 9th and 8th centuries BC. The decorative pottery from this period and were characterized by stylised figures of both humans and animals alike. As this period of pottery development progressed these figures became more accurately portrayed. The 8th and 7th century pottery development style was called the Oriental period and this was epitomised by human figures being portrayed as silouettes and animals appearing as friezes, both mythical and real. This period was followed by the black figure period commencing circa 600 BC to 400 BC and was characterised by black human figures taking prominence with all other figures being less prominent. Other periods that followed includ the Red Figure and the Helenistic periods.
The great South American civilisations including the Maya and Aztecs produced magnificent Decorative Vases as well. Vases from these cultures had symbolic meaning and were used both for ceremonial and practical purposes. South American pottery had their own unique designs and artwork. Their designs can be seen today in the many mass produced large vases, decorative pottery and garden pots that are sold in garden shops and gift shops around the world.
Despite the influence of Greek and South American pottery styles on today's designs probably the coutry that has influenced the development of decorative vases and pottery the most is China. Vases remains have been found in China which date back some 18,000 years. Porcelain pottery dates back at least 2000 year originating in China. The pottery art forms attained by Chinese artisans was truly astounding. From exquist miniature vases to large decorative vases and everything in between, the Chinese mastered it and the various Chinese dynastys added to the development of their pottery.
It is thanks to these and several other great ancient civilisations that we have such an array of pottery, from small pots to large vases, to choose from. The English even invented knife pottery in the 18th century to store knives in the dining room.
Large vases make great centre pieces especially in large areas so they are predominantly used in outdoor settings. However a great indoor space to display impressively decorated and large earthenware is in the entrance foyer of your house. Large decorative vases make a stunning and impressive statement to any visitor entering your home.
There is such a wide range of vases and earthenware to choose from that you will need to have some idea of what you are after before you go shopping so that you are not overwhelmed by the variety of choices. Important considerations like size, color, shape, where the vase is going, what patterns are desired, and the materials and texture need to be taken account of when choosing your special vase for your special space.
This sounds like a lot that needs to be done before you even start shopping for decorative vases but it will save you time, get you motivated, and it will be very rewarding. Good luck in your quest with finding those special decorative vases and pottery.
