FLOWER ARRANGING FOR BEGINNERS
For a beginner, arranging flowers can seem a bit intimidating as there are many different shapes and styles to consider and it’s hard to know where to begin.
Sometimes, even the idea of taking a bunch of flowers that’s been professionally arranged by a florist and popping them into a vase can be a little off-putting. Ever had a brilliant bunch turn into a messy mix when you transfer it from its gorgeous wrapping into the vase at home?
No need to get your knickers in a knot – or should that be fingers in a fix?. These basic guidelines will put you on track to creating your own beautiful bunches. And once you’ve mastered the basics, throw the rules out of the window and experiment. The more you practice, the more confidence you’ll have to put together unique creations that beautify any space and bring pleasure to others.
Things to consider are balance, scale, space, harmony, unity and texture. This may sound a bit technical, but it will make more sense as you go along.
To start with, select some flowers that have a special appeal to you. You can use varieties that have similar colours, or one kind of flower (monochromatic), or a mix of a single variety with fillers or put together an eclectic and colourful mix of different kinds of flowers. For beginners, it’s probably wise to choose colours that complement each other, eg pink and white, yellow and white. Try and aim for equilibrium with colour so that the darker ones don’t dominate and overpower the lighter-coloured ones. Another basic rule is to use an odd number of focal flowers as the base layer, and then build from there.
Try and visualize your arrangement in the place where it’s going to be seen. For a corner situation, you may consider a tall, dramatic arrangement and for a centerpiece, an elongated or round one would look beautiful. Interior decorating magazines and books, websites of florists in Perth and home décor programmes on TV will provide heaps of inspiring ideas.
Decide on which vase or container you’re going to use. To a large extent, the type of flowers you have chosen will influence what vase you use. There are masses of fun ideas – including silver goblets, old bottles or jars, empty tins, ceramic jugs, cut crystal glasses, baskets and goblets. A round fishbowl glass vase is great for creating traditional country style arrangements while a square or rectangular vase is more modern and sophisticated. Proportion is always a consideration when choosing the container.
Begin by putting the most striking flowers in the centre. A general guideline is to have the longest stem between one and two times as long as the vase. Then, flowers are added in order of size, with foliage inserted last. Cut stems at different lengths to create depth. Generally, varieties with narrower flowers and buds (eg gladiolus) look better when the stems are kept longer in a taller vase and full flowers look best when cut a few centimeters above the rim on the container.
You can use fillers, foliage etc to fill any gaps and to create texture, width and height. Filler flowers that have tiny leaves and smaller flowers also work really well as do fillers that have feathery or lacy leaves. The bulk of the greenery should be in the centre and the back of the arrangement to get the right balance.
One florist in Perth, Airport Florist, advises ‘floral artists’ to keep walking away from their work to make sure it looks good from all angles. Artists do it all the time to look at the perspectives, the composition, the light and balance etc. Remember, you’re the artist!
