How To Decorate Your Bathroom
Are you fed up of the old-fashioned style of your bathroom? Well, instead of a complete makeover, why don´t you retain some of the elements you already have and add one or two well-chosen items to create a "vintage” look, which seems to be all the rage at the moment. A daring, but at the same time very popular, idea is mixing black and white. A straightforward and good value for money way to give the walls a new look would be to leave the original white tiles and paint one or two walls black. However, take care here: be certain the room receives sufficient natural light, failing which you might end up with a claustrophobic effect. One way of being certainthis does not take place is to paint all doors and window frames white – as well as the ceiling if possible - to help create a greater sense of space.
The questionof accessories that you would like your vintage-style bathroom is also important. If you are looking for a new bathroom cabinet or perhaps a new mirror, you could always browse around a few antique shops to find something suitable and repaint in a colour which matches with the rest of the decor. Flowers, either fresh or dried, will look great in an appropriate vase. Glass or crystal are elegant and work well in periodsurroundings. Mirrors and prints can also make an impact , but, again, choose frames in keeping with your overall design theme. Finally, decorative candles will help give your bathroom a relaxed elegant appeal. Choose traditional designs and styles like the ones manufactured by companies like True Grace candles and Yankee candles for best results.
Another intriguing idea for the tiling in your bathroom is to replace the tiles you have with reclaimed vintage tiles. These can be found from architectural salvage merchants and are generallydecorated in a style which you just don’t find with modern tiles. Their lived-in, slightly tatty look is ideal if you are lookingto create a vintage style, shabby chic effect. To get the best effect use these tiles on the floor and use the colours from the tiles as your cue for the rest of the room. For example if your choice of tiles happens to feature decorations in yellow and blue, carry the same colour scheme through when you come to tile or paint the walls . Maybe you would prefer simply to paint the walls yellow instead of using tiles there as well , highlighting any details, like a dado rail or cornice, in blue. Done properly, this way of decorating any room can make a really dramatic impact and is a design approach which has been employed with considerable success when restoring a large number of older properties and hotels in the South of France and in Italy.
