Displaying Flowers In Glass Vases - Questioning The Logic
When we get some fresh flowers what's our first action? Invariably we look for appropriate glass vases to display them in. Glass vases have been used for hundreds of years to show off flowers but no one has really questioned why we chose this material. Well the answers are pretty simple and just follow logic...here they are:
Easy to clean. Because glass is a non-pores material it is easy to wipe clean. Additionally, because of its colour, dirt shows up pretty clearly. All sorts of fungus and microbes breed in vases so it is very important that they are cleaned thoroughly each time before they are used. New crystal vases may be a little more expensive but they are actually known to have antibacterial qualities
Photosynthesis. Plants harvest their energy from the sun's light during a phenomenon called photosynthesis. Put simply, if you deprive a plant from light its growth will be stunted and it may even die. This is the reason for people suggesting that when you display flowers, they should be getting plenty of sun light. Flowers in glass vases are given the best chances of producing energy for themselves, and thus staying fresh, as the glass lets in light from every direction.
Viewing pleasure. This is as simple as can be. We buy flowers so that we can enjoy the look of them, and seeing as a large part of the plant is below the neck of the vase, glass makes perfect sense. How else would you be able to study the contours of the stem, the fresh green leaves or the lower-budding flowers. This is the same reason that we use wine glasses, so that we can actually enjoy the view of what is being contained.
