Five family days out in and around Witney
Five family days out in or around the Witney area.
If you're not taking the children on the proverbial family seven or fourteen day break this summer but are planning to do a series of day trips then with a bit of luck from the five trips chosen perhaps one or two of the following might well be worth bearing in mind.
The first day trip to come out of the starting blocks is a day out to the Cotswold Farm Park at Guiting Power close to Stow on the Wold in Gloucestershire. This excellent farm has been an utter delight for many a family day out. It has plenty of seasonal farm things to do and take part in and has a calendar of events on their website for what's on so you can plan and choose the day that suits your family's wishes.
Standard everyday features of the farm are the different farm animal species you can meet and no Guiting Power visit is complete for the younger members of your family without a go on the famous little children's tractor school that operates at certain times of the day. The farm has a cafe, a food shop, a children's play park and a gift shop that sells all the usual bits and pieces.
If the weather's set fair the farm has an abundance of tables and trestles for you to sit at and eat your delightful packed lunches at.
The farm is open daily from March till late October from 10.30 till 5.00 with last admissions a half an hour before closing. Costs at the time of writing are adults £7.70 Child (3-16 years) £6.25 or a family ticket for two adults and two children at £25.00.
Travelling directions- from Stow on the Wold take the B4077 towards Tewkesbury and turn left at the brown farm sign- the farm can be found on your right in 1.25 miles.
For day out number two you will by and large need a fine warm sunny day as the outing for this trip is a visit to Oxford's only open air swimming pool at Hinksey. The lido can be found just off the main Abingdon Road in Lake Street. If travelling in by car parking is free on the site for the first two hours and if you require any longer a parking permit can be purchased from the reception. Otherwise take one of the regular buses that pass the pool from the City Centre. The buses that go by are the X3, X13, X2 or the City 35.
Hinksey has like other lidos up and down the country has all of a sudden become very fashionable again, and as always the pool in Oxford has continued to be a big hit with all the family. The pool is heated and is only open during the summer months. (April – October).
On site there are changing rooms and a Cafe for those all important drinks and snacks. The opening times are Mon-Fri 7.30 till 8pm and 9.00 till 8pm Sat-Sun. Admission prices for adults is £5.30 and for a family ticket (2 Adults plus up to 3 children) is £15.50. The pool offers early and late tickets at £4.10 and £10.00 respectively.
Next up is the Cotswold Wildlife Park near Burford. This park is around nine miles from Witney and without doubt this evergreen Wildlife Park never fails to impress the children visiting. Again the inventory of things to do and see are comprehensive but a quick look at the Wildlife Park's website will give any future visit a great head start to the day's planning.
The Park is open every day throughout the year except Christmas Day therefore allowing the animals and reptiles to open their presents in peace!
As usual the park has a Cafe and a gift shop and plenty of other attractions within to keep the little ones completely amused. Parking at the site is easy as the park has a very large car park. On site there are plenty of places for a family to have a picnic.
The Wildlife Park cost of admission are- adults £12.50 and children (3-16) £8.50 with children under the age of three free.
Travelling to the Wildlife Park is the easier if travelling by car as there is no regular bus service that passes the Park. Head onto the A40 to Burford and turn left at the roundabout and head towards Lechlade. The signs for the Widlife Park are evident from this roundabout.
Trip four heads back into the City of Dreaming Spires again. The venue this time is the world famous Pitt Rivers Museum on Parks Road just off the City Centre.
This wonderful museum has continuously over the years kept thousands of young children well entertained through the large skeletal structures that hug the centre stage of the museum...........Dinosaurs!!!
As well as the dinosaurs the museum has more than enough things inside to keep the children amused and of course the biggest bonus of all for any cash conscious family is the museum is free for all to enjoy.
Opening hours are 10-4.30 Tuesday to Sunday (and bank holiday Mondays) and 12-4.30 Mondays.
Travelling to Pitt Rivers from Witney is straightforward- take the S2 bus from the town centre and get off at the stop nearest to Browns Restaurant in the Woodstock Road in Oxford. From this stop head for Keble Road (just off the Banbury Road) and the walk to the museum on Parks Road should take about 5 to 10 minutes.
The last but not least trip is to the bus Museum situated in Long Hanborough. This fascinating vintage bus museum is a real hit for all of the family and for any real bus enthusiast. A great day to visit would be any first Sunday of the month when at 3 o'clock a vintage bus from the museum collection will leave for a free ride. For all details it is advisable to check the bus museums website.
Entrance fees to the museum are Adults £4 and Children aged 3-16 years old £2. A family ticket costs £9 for two adults and two children.
The museum only opens on Sundays, Wednesdays and most Bank holidays. The opening hours are 10.30 to 4.30 with last admission at 3.30.
If travelling by car the museum has plenty of parking. If using public transport bus service 242 from Witney to Woodstock passes the museums entrance.
