Saving Money by Feeding Pigs
Countless piggy banks have graced the shelves of homes throughout the ages. Piggy banks are classic items that people associate with saving money. These have an image of a fat round pig that holds coins. However, retrieving the money inside was difficult as these had to be broken apart.
Piggy banks have evolved throughout history. Contrary to popular belief, piggy banks are not called as they are because of their shape, but of the kind of clay that is used to create them. During the Middle Ages, metal was both expensive and rare. Because there was insufficient metal supply, families used clay to create their household pots and jars. The most popular clay back then was called "pygg".
Pygg is an orange clay and was used widely in Europe because it was inexpensive. Whenever families wanted to save coins, they were more likely to rely on pygg jars. Inevitably, these pygg jars became known as pygg banks. Later in the 18th century, craftsmen were frequently asked to create pygg banks. Misunderstanding the request, the potters crafted them in shapes of pigs and painted them likewise, which then became popular.
Because piggy banks have been around for many years, people have developed a hobby of collecting them. They are no longer limited to pig images, but have evolved into various designs and shapes. They are available for the avid collector from vintage designs to personalized piggy banks for kids.
Piggy banks are molded, painted, or fashioned as the maker pleases, retaining, of course, its original function. Piggy banks can be made using clay, porcelain, or piggy bank ceramic. Some are hand-painted, some have intricate designs, and some are simply plain yet lovable. Practically every culture has its take on piggy bank designs.
