Life in Puerto Vallarta is a Feast

At its most basic, food is the fuel that makes the human machine run. It’s the stuff we take in, the apples and bananas, steaks and chops, that fill our stomachs and feed our brains. In a cultural context, however, food is the centerpiece, or the backdrop, around which many special local traditions are focused. Step outside your Puerto Vallarta luxury vacation rental and enjoy some of the local cuisine and customs associated with dining in Mexico.

In Puerto Vallarta, they eat . . .

There are a few staple items of Mexican cuisine that you can expect to encounter, whatever region you’re visiting. Tortillas, thin unleavened bread made of corn or flour, spicy sauces and beans are part of many Mexican meals. These aren’t the bland packaged varieties found on grocery store shelves; local cooks and chefs are likely to prepare and serve tortillas and beans from scratch using flavorful lard. If you’re lucky enough to sit down in one of these establishments, abandon your healthy diet for one day and enjoy.

Some dishes are particularly associated with the Mexican state of Jalisco and with Puerto Vallarta. It is no surprise that seafood dishes have a large presence on the menu, given the city’s location on the Pacific coast. Pico de gallo, an appetizer made with jicama, oranges and pepper flakes, is another local favorite. Pork is part of many regional recipes, including pozole (a hominy-based soup) and birria, pork stew in tomato broth.

Eat out in Puerto Vallarta

A number of restaurants offer Mexican specialties. La Chata in downtown Puerto Vallarta gets good reviews from diners. The menu includes favorites from Jalisco, and dinner is often served to the sounds of Mariachi music. Folks also enjoy a meal at Café de Olla in the Zona Romantica. It’s a pretty popular place, and there is sometimes a wait to get a table.

Puerto Vallarta is a cosmopolitan city (isn’t that why you decided on a Mexican vacation villa rental?), and local cuisine reflects that attitude. When you have enjoyed your favorite Mexican food, see what else the local dining scene has to offer: Japanese, French and Italian restaurants in establishments that range from the very casual to the upscale.

Don’t forget your manners

Remember, you’re a guest, and your hosts will appreciate your nice behavior. A couple of tips: it is considered good manners to keep your hands above the table during mealtime; and order items that are listed on the menu – if you try to improvise, you may end up with a surprise meal. When you find a dish you admire, you might ask the cook at your Puerto Vallarta Vacation Villa to teach you how to prepare it!
